AI & Academic Integrity: How Fine is the Line

In an era where technology is deeply integrated into education, students are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence (AI) powered writing tools to enhance their learning and productivity through essays, reports, and other content efficiently.

Whilst tools like ChatGPT, Wordtune, Gemin.ai and Copilot have been a game changer, concerns regarding the ethical use of such tools still loom large.

At the heart of this discussion is the issue of systemic plagiarism. While AI writing tools can offer valuable assistance in drafting papers, there is a risk that students may misuse them to plagiarise content. To address this concern, educational institutions are emphasising the importance of proper citation and originality checks.

While the usage of AI tools as a shortcut to completing class tasks, Professor. Ong, a leading expert in educational technology at the Faculty of Information, Communication & Technology (FICT) thinks there are better ways for Utarians to leverage AI tools in more ethical ways.

"I encourage students to use AI as a tool for learning and creativity, rather than a shortcut to completing assignments," said Professor Ong Song Kuok. "By understanding the ethical guidelines and utilising these tools responsibly, students can enhance their writing skills and critical thinking abilities," he added.

According to him, one of the key features of ethical AI writing tools is the integration of plagiarism detection software which would help students identify and correct any instances of unintentional plagiarism, therefore, ensuring that their work is original and properly sourced.

This sentiment is also echoed by several other educators who emphasise the importance of teaching students to use AI writing tools responsibly.

"Incorporating AI into the classroom is without a doubt incredibly beneficial, but it's essential to educate students about the ethical implications," explained Dr Zarinah Binti Hamdan, who is an expert in Statistical Computing and Decision Analytics at the Faculty of Science (FSc).

"On a personal level I would like our students to be proficient in using these tools while also understanding the importance of integrity in academic work,” she told Kampar Daily.

She further suggested that while navigating the ethical intricacies of AI writing tools can be difficult to students even beyond UTAR, Utarians can resort to guidelines and support resources such as workshops on digital ethics, tutorials on proper citation practices when using AI-generated content, and discussions on the ethical implications of automated writing offered by the university.

Meanwhile, some Utarians appear to embrace a positive approach to the usage of AI writing tools on the whole, "We see AI as a valuable tool, but we also recognize the importance of maintaining academic integrity," says Sarah, a third-year student majoring in English Literature.

"It's about striking a balance between leveraging technology to enhance our work and ensuring that our ideas remain authentic and original,” she added.

“I’d say the aim is not just to be consumers of technology; we also have to be its stewards," said James Koh, a computer science student. "By using AI responsibly and ethically, we can harness its potential for positive change while safeguarding the values of academic integrity,” he added.

“我们鼓励学生将AI工具视为学习和创造性的工具，但不是完成任务的捷径，若学生能遵守坚守AI工具的道德守则，这还能提高学生们的写作和批判性思维能力。”

他补充，AI写作工具要避免陷入道德争议关键在于其应具有检测抄袭的程序，以确保成品是原创且具可信来源的，而这观点也得到其他与他同共识的教育工作者的认同。

另外，优大金宝拉曼大学统计计算与决策分析学院（FSC）的扎里娜博士指出，将AI工具融入教学上得确有好处，但同时，教育学生遵守AI工具得道德守则更是至关重要。

“虽然学生在解决AI写作工具复杂的道德问题时可能会感到困难，但他们可求助于大学所提供的资源，例如数字伦理研讨会、使用AI生成内容时的适当引用实践教程以及讨论自动化写作的道德影响等。“

除了搜集大学教授的建议，本报也采访了优大学生对于使用AI写作工具的看法。其中一位英语专业的学生（莎拉）表示，AI是一种宝贵的工具，但她也深深理解保持学术诚信的重要性。

另一名计算机科学研究生詹姆士则表示，AI写作工具的关键是在于利用技术提升学生们的工作，同时确保他们想法保持真实和原创之间能取得平衡，这样才能利用它的潜力带来积极变革，学术诚信的价值观。
